Poetry and Transculturality in Asia and Europe – The Material World

Inter- and transcultural topics are abundant in various literatures (including but not limited to Russian, Chinese, Japanese, English and German) since the late 19th century, and have been developing surprisingly similar characteristics even in geographically distant locations, different genres or time periods. One particular factor fostering such transformations is the transformation process of a particular literary motive from one culture to another, often by the use of translation. It becomes especially apparent when depicting borderline experience, or in a multilingual context. In our contemporary globalized world, such issues are not just interesting from a historian’s perspective, but are relevant for reevaluating cultural contacts all over the globe. A great many of these phenomena are connected to the material world, be it the depiction of material objects inside poetry, the interaction with material aspects of a literary work, or the inspiration of the author by physical stimulants.

We especially welcome research on poetic works, but will also consider papers dealing with prose genres.

interface Journal of European Languages and Literatures is inviting original unpublished papers written in English, French, German, Spanish Russian or Italian for interface Issue 12, to be published in June 2020 that could address, but need not be restricted to, the following topics:

  • the traveling poet and poetical experiences during travel
  • poetry, literature and cinema
  • poetry, literature and fine art
  • literary cliches of geographical locations
  • cultural translation of writing systems and other physical features of language
  • graphical features of script and concrete poetry
  • the poet in the material world in an inter- or transcultural context

Papers should be submitted online at http://interface.org.tw/ no later than March 31, 2020.
